Out There In the World of Kids

YOUNGLIVES

YoungLives was established specifically to mentor teen moms, who struggle with many challenges— among them poverty, isolation, depression, and abandoned education.  YoungLives builds trusting relationships with the girls using “tried and true” Young Life methods of reaching teens.  Leaders help them to view their circumstances through the lens of the Gospel.   These volunteers want them to know that their worth is in Christ and that their babies are blessings.

Three top priority goals are to introduce the teen mothers to Jesus, encourage them to complete their education, and discuss the wisdom of avoiding a second pregnancy.  Jacksonville’s YL teen mothers have been remarkably successful with meeting these goals over the past ten years.

Involvement is flexible depending on a volunteer’s schedule and other commitments.  Choose what you feel called to do:

1.  Attend club on a Monday night (5:30 P.M. - 7:30 P.M.) to meet the girls and their babies and see what “organized chaos” looks like.  We have dinner together, club fun and games, and message about the love  of Christ and life skills. Clubs are held the first three Mondays of each month (with the exception of weeks when we have special events or no school that Monday.) Leadership training is held on the fourth Monday of each Month.

2.Provide and/or serve a meal at club with a group.  Approximately 30 total volunteers and girls attend weekly.

3.Participate in childcare.  Pray over and play with babies and children during club time in the nurseries.  Men are invited to volunteer in this capacity.  The young children are enamored with volunteer men as they have few male role models with whom to interact with.a

4.Women or couples are invited to pick-up girls and babies for club and drive them home. This is very important to the ministry.  Children must be in car seats and the girls each have one to strap into your car.  We have a transportation coordinator who texts you every Monday your route with names and phone numbers

5. We welcome a prayer group at your church to pray over this ministry on a regular basis.

6. We have special fund raising events during the year and invite those with the gift of  hospitality to participate in planning and hosting.

7. Those who have the gifts of communication and marketing could help with newsletters, promotions, even visiting other churches with the YoungLives story.

8. Becoming a club leader and mentor is a frontline position and very meaningful. We are not their bankers, or taxi service but we do try to meet needs by recommending resources and sharing our life experiences.  We have accompanied girls to court, obtaining glasses through Sulzbacher, a

trip to the zoo or a Broadway experience.  We have partnered with First Coast Women’sServices, Healing Ministries, etc. (Leaders and drivers are background checked).

9. Camp is invariably “The best week of their lives”!! We have room for adult guests, leaders   and childcare volunteers at week-end winter camp in the Ocala National Forest in February or 5 day summer camp in Brevard, NorthCarolina. From delicious food in a ramped-up, adventure setting to quiet cabin times for personal reflection and hopeful messages about a relationship with Jesus, you canexperience the transformation of a withdrawn, confused, even frightened soul learning to tfeel loved and valued because “He first loved us”.  These moms finally have a place to belong and a place to be a friend and have a friend. (Leaders and drivers are background checked).

10.  Your church could host a special holiday or graduation celebration or open your facility to club meetings.

11.  We have a Board we are building which supports  the goals of the ministry and continually reviews strategy and operations, contributing ideas and some hands on volunteer time.

Thank you for your serious consideration of meeting some of these needs to grow the ministry to reach every teen mom in our community.Contact Jordan Whitmarsh at beachhesylvs@yahoo.com with any questions.
